"EVs don't need servicing" is a common but inaccurate claim — electric cars need less of certain traditional servicing, not none. No oil changes and no spark plugs is genuinely true, but tyres, brakes, suspension and a handful of EV-specific checks still apply, and in a couple of areas an EV can wear differently to a petrol or diesel car in ways worth understanding.
What does an electric car actually need serviced?
Strip away the items that simply don't exist on an EV — no engine oil, no oil filter, no spark plugs, no timing belt or chain, no exhaust — and what's left is largely the same list any car needs: tyres, brakes and brake fluid, suspension and steering components, the 12V auxiliary battery that powers lights and electronics, cabin/pollen filter, and a general safety check.
On top of that baseline, most EV services add checks specific to the electric drivetrain — a battery state-of-health diagnostic, charge port and cable inspection, and a software/firmware status check, since manufacturers regularly push updates that affect range, charging behaviour or safety systems.
Do EVs need less servicing than petrol or diesel cars?
In terms of the traditional combustion-engine checklist, yes — there's simply no oil to change, no filters tied to a fuel system, and no timing components that wear on a schedule. That removes a meaningful chunk of what a petrol or diesel service covers.
But "less servicing" isn't the same as "no servicing". The safety-critical items — brakes, tyres, suspension — still need checking on the same kind of interval as any car, and the EV-specific items (battery health, charging hardware, software) are new checks that simply don't exist on a combustion car at all.
Does regenerative braking mean my brakes need less checking?
Regenerative braking slows the car by using the electric motor to recover energy back into the battery, which means the physical brake pads and discs are used less than on an equivalent petrol car — for most drivers, this genuinely extends pad and disc life.
The catch is that less use can bring its own problem: discs can start to corrode from sitting relatively unused, especially in wet UK conditions, and pads can occasionally stick in their carriers from lack of regular movement. So EV brakes still need checking — just partly for different reasons than wear alone.
What about tyres, suspension and the 12V battery?
EVs are typically heavier than an equivalent petrol or diesel model because of the battery pack, and often deliver their power more instantly — both factors that can accelerate tyre wear if not checked regularly. The extra weight also puts additional load through suspension components over the car's life, making a proper suspension inspection worth taking seriously rather than skipping.
Most EVs also carry a small 12V battery, separate from the main traction battery, which powers lights, infotainment and other electronics. It's easy to overlook because it's not the headline battery, but it fails in the same way any 12V battery does and is a genuine part of a proper EV service check.
Will servicing my EV independently affect my warranty?
For the routine, non-high-voltage work — tyres, brakes, suspension, cabin filters, 12V battery — no. The same Motor Vehicle Block Exemption Order 2023 (MVBEO) protection that applies to petrol and diesel cars applies here too: independent servicing to the manufacturer's schedule, with matching-quality parts, doesn't invalidate your warranty.
Work on the high-voltage battery pack, drive motor or HV cabling is a different matter — this requires specific certification, and most independent garages will be upfront about what falls inside and outside their scope rather than attempting HV work without it. Ask directly before booking if you're unsure what a specific job involves.
